Default NP242 Replacement

I'm in the market for a new NP242 TC. My current one is well, shot. I found this out after taking it apart with a friend and finding the chain lose as hell (already knew this, was taking it apart to put a new one on), and walls scratched, a retarded hole in the case, and a loooooooose gear and main shaft. Not to mention the gears and the gear sleeve? behind the gear look a little shaved (well a fair amount shaved).

So I'm going to return the Drive chain and just try to find a used NP242 from a junker. I'm hoping for tips, and what to look for when I search for a replacement. I don't want to have to fab anything up, I rather just have a simple replacement.

I know I need a 23 spline, with electric speed cable. What years should I look for? And are there any ZJ's I can pull from?

Edit: Oh and look at the case, see the silver? That's metal shavings. GOOD GAME.

super death! I would check ur local craigslist, or ebay. The junk yards around me wanted like 300-450 for the 242 they act like its a hemi from a 68 charger or something saying that they are super rare. I paid 100 for mine from craigslist, its super quiet. I feel the need to check my chain now, after seeing your picks.

Yeh no kidding, I wish I went to replace it sooner. I already checked CL and ebay, nothing. CL was full of off spline 231s or already destroyed 242s. Also found a junked 92 XJ for sale, that had it's NP242 blow up on the road. Good stuff.

I'm going to price and checking shipping for a fully rebuilt one at pepboys. A friend that works there says they are like 300$ when you return a core.

Edit: Another picture

Have you thought of replacing your 23 spline np242 with a 23 spline np231? Might be cheaper!

The np231 was going to be my last choice. And pepboys is expensive. about 1k after core. Screw that

Hey, you can get a cable driven speedo driven transfer case too, I did and swapped my electronic speedo housing into the cable driven case. It was the same as far as the male end with the drive gear. I have seen the cover part for sale did the chain rip all the way through the case? My friend had his 242 rebuilt at a trans shop for $325 he dropped it off and picked it up. I love the 242, its stronger and you can run it in between a solid and loose surface without going back and forth from 4x4 to 4x2
