NP242 questions
I looked under my 91 4.0 auto jeep and it has the NP242 of transfer case. I was reading up on how the 4x4 works and everything and i was reading about some having a actuator and some vaccum lines that make it work and i can't find any vac that are hooked to my t case or anything that looks like the actuator that i seen at autozone's web site sorry if these are stupid questions but i just like to understand how stuff works so if i ever need to work on it i already know how. I did find a line that does go back by the transfer case but it just goes up a little in front of the fire wall and it stops and there is no cap or anything on it and was wondering what that was for.

My 91 does not have any lines just a vent tube. Some earlyer XJs have a vac. set up to the front axle to a shift fork that engages the pass. side shaft. Hope this helps any. O and I also have a NP242.

I've got the 231 in this Cherokee I just picked up. What can you tell me about it. My recollection is that it has been around for a long time. Seems like I remember it being in some full-sized Chevy tks. What's the strength of the front axle then? This rig has a plow on it. Thanks...

Well the 231 is in more Xjs than the 242. Most people prefere the 231 due to it having less moving parts inside so it is stronger in a sense. There are a crap load more stuff out the for the 231 t case. I dont know what else it came it but as far as your front axle what axle do you have. Cherokees came with a Dana 30 up front but with it being a 87 it could have been swapped out.
