Default Np242 problems

I have an 88 xj with the np242 case. The 4lo works wonders however it clunks like crazy sometimes so I assume the chain is stretched.
But the 4hi pt time or full time has never worked. It makes an awful noise when the font drive shaft is spinning like the t case is full of marbles. Does it need a rebuild? If I got a rebuild kit and a chain would it fix the 4hi? Thanks guys
Ill get the video up of me spinning the yoke without the shaft so y'all can here it ASAP

DITTO! Get one of those little snake lights and shine in there and see. Or even one of those snake cameras with the lighted end. Catch the used oil in a CLEAN container and run a magnet through it. Dust isn't a big deal, but bits and pieces are a little different. If there is nothing wierd in there fill it up, drive in 2wd for a while then try it again. If it still makes noise adjust the linkage.

Check out the front end too, make sure all of your bases are covered. U joints, bearings, gears. I'm no expert and for lack of a better phrase am talking out of my rear. But I myself would rather find a bad bearing or something rather than going to all the effort of rebuilding the case and still having the clunk.

Or, just pull the fill plug, stick one of you little fingers in there and pick up a sample of the lube, if you can reach it. normal maintenance.....

Sounds nasty,
might be time for a remanufactured one with HD chain.

that's pretty much what I assumed
anyone know where to find a inexpensive remanned case with a hd chain?
I can find em on ebay for 700$ but igot a guy here that will rebuild mine with hd parts for 850$ seemed steep but hes a good guy and does good work
I still gotta check/change fluid to see if that fixes anything

I got a remanufactured 242 with heavy duty chain for $500 delivered, plus $100 core. With full warranty. Had mine in for 3 years now. Did not want a used one.
From "Man-Trans" great service, great tech help.
Call them.

Hey cruiser here is the fluid, it was up where it was supposed to be but it looks a little funny? Like gray streaks in it.. It was very runny as well

Looks like the fluid might be red if it wasn't for all that metal suspended in it.

I mean uh just add some Lucas. Yeah...
