well im still concerned about when to use the "part-time" funtction on my xj. because i am aware it has been used moderatley over the years on pavement. is there something i could look for to identify any pontential detrimental wear on my driveshaft, axle, etc.?
I wouldnt worry about it too much if its working fine now, Im sure many people have done it. The main thing to worry about when using on pavement is a stretched chain. It will also not turn right (jumpy).

Second that on the Dextron II trans fluid in the trans and in your transfer case. Your case will have a round tag by your drain and fill plug identifying the type of case. I run the NP231J up to 70mph in 4 hi, part time, in slippery conditions. (Aside, what kind of fool at 70 mph in slippery??) Just sayin it will take it in part time mode if the drivetrain is on surfaces providing some slip and the 231 can handle up to any normal legal speed you want to throw at it. CHANGE YOUR FLUID! What are you trying to save a couple bucks and cause undue wear on your TCase? The fluid may not be burnt but it looses it's shear properties over time, picks up water condensate, collects fine debris particles as it flushes thru your Tcase. Change it, a change will do you good and it couldn't be easier to do.
Here's a pic of the Peep at 60mph on a typical beautiful Canadian morning, in 4Hi and lovin it.

The new fluid won't hurt ya. The prime benefits, fluid is full power of all the chemistry, all moisture is out, and most important you have flushed the fine particles of metal that wear off of things that rotate within the tcase. Pull the lower drain plug, drain, plug back in, pull the fill plug above, fill till fluid spills out, plug back in. Dextron 2, 3, 4, it;s all good. USE Dextron, not other.
