So. Little bit of a pickle. I'm looking for the front output nut on an NP231 transfer case. Now I had ordered one but the nut was too big. After some research I found there are two different size shafts? I need the small one, but have no clue where to even find one.

 

Any u-pull junkyards near you? That would be my first spot to check.

 

First thing I did, I went as far as 80 miles. All pick n pulls in my area with cherokees the cases are long gone.

I got my first one at jeep hut. I honestly don't know, it doesnt show diameter or thread length so I'm not really sure.

 

The one I linked says M20 right on the nut. If you have a 20mm wrench, see if it fits over the threaded shaft (or bust out a caliper and do it that way).

 

Gotcha, sorry. Still learning new things, including threads and all. I will take a look and keep posted.

 

Ah gotcha. So the 20mm wouldn't fit the actual nut, that's the diameter of the threaded shaft. I sometimes use wrenches as a "quick reference" to figure out what diameter a bolt or stud is. The open end of the wrench is (about) the size of what's stamped on the side of said wrench. Again, it's just a quick check method I use sometimes. If I need to get more precise, out comes the caliper.

 

Alright, so today im going to go check with the wrench (jeep is in a different garage so it's a little out of the way) and find the diameter. Digging around in the forums it looks like there were two different front output shafts for the 231. The more common one is the larger threaded shaft one and the smaller one is no longer made. Every parts catalog I've looked at doesn't even show the nut (still could be missing something). In the meantime, I'll find the thread shaft diameter and go from there.

 

Just measured the thread diameter and it was a 20..... I went back to my order and the nut I ordered was an m20. Am I missing something or did I get sent the wrong part?

 

Well there's always the possibility that it could be a different thread pitch.

Does it begin threading on and stop?

 

No, the nut I ordered slides all the way down. Doesn't even touch the threads. I'm going to a swap meet tomorrow so I'm going to bring the one I ordered and look around and see what I find.
