np207 to np231 swap

Default np207 to np231 swap

so i tried a search here and on google and i can't find the info i'm looking for. I've got an '86 xj with the 2.8 and a 5speed and my np207 is crappin out. so. i want to swap in a 21 spline np231 but my question is do i need to get new front and rear driveshafts or no?

Im not an expert here but Im pretty sure the 21 splin is not compatable with your tranny unless you already have a 21 spline tc.

an np231 from a 4 cylinder equipped xj SHOULD bolt to your transmission, but i am not sure about your driveshafts working

No, you do not. It is a good upgrade though to go to the newer style CV joint, especially if you are going to lift it.

oh ok, i was under the impression that i'd need a 21 spline input shaft for a 5speed manual but i'm prob wrong

You do need to make sure you have a 21 spline input shaft. That wasn't mentioned, so I did not bring it up. I have done this swap. I am not sure when they went back to 23 spline, but a 231 out of 87 - 90 will work I think.
