I am so lost and confused. I have an np231 in my 95 xj (auto) that sounds grenaded, wont stay in 4x4 , and needs to be repaired or replaced. any pointers on where to start?, IE, is it even worth rebuilding one (i know, hard to say w/out seeing whats goin on inside it) or should i just find a pickNpull and swap. if so, what will fit? and or, what can i expect to find inside mine and is the rebuild even worth tackling?

cost, as always, is absolutely an issue.

I think if you rebuild one, go to picknpull and get one and rebuild that, Keep that jeep driveable until your ready to put it in

B4 removing one I suggest pulling drain plug ans sticking finger in and make sure theres no metal/garbage sitting in the bottom . Be a real pain to bring home one with unseen issues.

If you're getting a 97 and newer tcase, I believe the driveshaft is a little shorter.
