Because it's intended for the '97-'01. The '96 has different pin out on the connector and I never got around to developing a checklist for the '96 and prior.

Okay so I replaced the nss with a new one. The check engine light went away for a while. Now today it came back, same symptoms as before. No power in D but if I go into 1-2 I can accelerate. If I disconnect the battery for a couple minutes the check engine light goes away and it will drive fine. Then after a while it will come back and have no power in drive again..
If it was the tcm wouldn't i have no power in D all the time, even after I disconnect the battery? And the solenoids, if they were bad wouldn't it always have and issue even if the computer is reset? I'm thinking about just getting a new tranny.
Anyone have these issues?

Did you go through the test procedures (above)? Doesn't seem like it.

I plugged the scanner in today.
Codes:
P0758
P0700
I have new solenoids coming this week along with trans filter. Everything I have read about these two codes are fixed by replacing the solenoids. Looks like I'll be dropping the pan this weekend

Replaced the solenoids and filter yesterday night. Waited for the rtv to cure overnight till today. Filled the trans with fluids, and my xj has never ran better. The worst part about the job was getting covered in transmission fluid lol.
Thanks again everyone for the help
