Default No Start Issue

Well i got the bright idea of cutting everything from the cat. and back off the exhaust on my 88 xj (this is my trail truck). Now it wont start at all . I also have the air box removed if that matters too. I can get it to sputter when i cover the air intake with my hand but it wont run. My question is, do you think it is a back presure issue? or could it be somthing involveing the intake? Any help or advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks and have a great day!

I have never heard of not having backpressure cause something to not start. Ran my GC without anything after the headers for several months with no problem, I'm guessing somethin decided to take a dump and its just a coincidence. Check for the basics fuel, air, and spark- then go from there

Thanks a bunch Costomzj73. I think I found the problem. I had no fuel getting to the engine so I checked the fuel pump and the filter was clogged. I swapped it out and haven't had a chance to check it yet. Once I get everything back together what psi should the fuel rail be at? And will I have to prime the lines? Thanks again!

Ya turn the key several times to let it prime, although I doubt a fuel filter would keep it from running. Testing the pressure would be a good idea, I'm not sure on your cherokee but it should spike and then come down to somewhere around 30psi when its running. I'm sure some cherokee guys will chime in on the correct fuel pressure

Is there any way I can check the fuel pump before I put it back in? I heard that its posible to hook it directly up to the battery but I don't know what wires to hook up? I'm guessing that the black one is ground but what one would be positive? Thanks for your help again!

You removed the fuel pump or the fuel filter?

I removed the fuel pump to get to the filter on the end of it.

On got ya, I'm sure there is a way to test it out while it's out but I'm not sure... you could just throw it back in and rent a pressure tester that hooks up to your fuel rail from autozone and test it. You get all your money back
