Yeah I’m going through the same thing, except I don’t have to worry about inspections.
Today I took off the NSS and cleaned it up, shined up the copper bits with sand paper, brushed on a little DioxIT contact cleaner/enhancer, put it back together and put it back in. It starts fine but still no backup lights

on a serious note tho.. I've got a 95 country edition. 4.0 inline 6.. the backup lights have never... ever worked... ever.. over the past 17 years of my owning the cherokee.. I just never bothered to really get into why they didnt.
I'll be following this thread..once I get the engine back together, I want to get those lights working

Hey, up here in New England, 80+ degrees is "Hot like alien *****". 100+ is just unbearable. Add to it that it never comes without a s-load of humidity and even the guys living in boxes under the freeway overpass are inside with the A/C on!!
the rear harness had very poor quality coating on the wires, and also feeds up in a tight awkward place
here, we cannot get a roadworthy without reverse lights
so, i just get out the test light, pin probes, roll of wire and continuity meter
In consultation with circuit & connector diagram, I bypass the problem wires
also fitted reverse light globes that beep and flashe, (for cars, NOT trucks..too loud)...an excellent safety enhancement
* edit..be VERY careful working on NSS wiring/reverse lights..i did a stupid thing once, and was lucky no one got hurt
