Common issue on '97+:

Fix usually involves cleaning the gauge cluster contacts and using a dielectric grease when reassembling.

The fun part about this problem is if you whack the top of the dash above the gauge cluster the gauges will come back on. The problem is that the connector for the gauge cluster is attached to the back of the firewall, so if the cluster isnt pushed in all the way it looses connection. Very common on 97+ XJ's and TJ's. The fix is to pull the cluster out and clean the connectors and bend the pins in the connectors so they make better contact. On my TJ, I also disconnected the plugs from the firewall so they "floated" behind the cluster and never had anymore problems.
My gauges use to die and where it displays the miles it would say no bus. and i found on here somewhere with the same problems and they said that its ussualy a plug loose somewhere behind the dash. So i just give it a couple good wacks and it works again
