The rear end is a 8.25. Its a good enough axle and I doubt your "clunking" is coming from it. If you want to "upgrade" you can get a "lunchbox" locker for ~250-300 bucks. That way you would have Posi to help you get back to your hunting stuff.
I would check the transfer case, maybe a stretched chain.

The 231 is a good TC and should give you no problems. They are known to stretch chains though.

U-joints can make a clunk- and are cheap...

Check your trans mount. That could be the culprit.

Ujoints, Trans mount, Ubolts and the slip yoke will all cause the clunking. Take of the rear DS, check to see how good the ujoints and replace if needed, then pack greese into the slip yoke the goes into the t-case before replacing the DS.

All cherokees develop this clunk, some call it the "Chrysler clunk", I help mine out by packing the slip yoke. A diff fluid change never hurts

My cherokee dosn't clunk either when it is cold. It feels like the trans shifts to drive and reverse more glently when cold and takes up the driveline slack before fully engaging.
