Default Newbie Axle swap ?

Hi everyone , Newbie to here and Xj's - Just bought a 96' 2 door , 5 speed sport , np231j , d30 front , d35c trac-loc rear , bone stock - The rear has a noise when on the pedal and off so I popped the cover off and the only thing I see wrong is 1 out of the 4 spider gears has 6 teeth missing pieces so I cleaned it all out and put the cover back on and lubed with 85-140 for now , I found an 8.25 complete rear with low miles for $400.00 with my 3.07 ratio is it a straight swap - driveshaft length to yoke the same - spring perches and brake lines match ? or will mine be ok for just street driving for a while , Is $400.00 too much , or just replace the spider gear , sorry so long just dont know what to do as far as best money spent , Thanks

$400 is alot of money for that axle,$200 or less is what I would exspect to pay. If the rest of the diff is ok I would replace the spider gear for know until you find a good rearend. If you are just in town and not going out of town it should be fine the way it is.

I would have to agree, $200 or less. $400 could get you a Dana 44 to put back there.

I kinda fig. it was high but rebuilding the d35 would be that and not really worth it for future offroad worthiness , just curious if the swap is just easy - 2 door or 4 door lengths in the driveshaft and all , The po said it has made noise for a while but I had to see what it was , I guess it will last a while for steet use ?

The axle should "bolt up." As for DS Im not sure, someone else will have to chime in. I think you should be able to use the one you have now, but idk. And a 2dr is the same as a 4dr (length, height, width, etc.).

The driveshaft length for the D35 and the 8.25 are different. The D35 is longer.
