Default New XJ 1988 owner

Hey all!

I've just got my first Jeep and there are some issues with it I need to fix to make it legal for road use.

First off the low beams light up quite dimly - are they H4 halogen bulbs as standard? Or do i need to convert? The high beams are not functioning as of right now either and I've read that the light switch seems to be a common issue but this one seems to be working fine between the parking lights and the low beams.

Second the brakes seem a bit dull so a set of new rotors+pads for the front and a set of brake shoes for the rear - but how do I change the shoes for the rear? Anybody that has a good guide for the XJ?

And the oil gauge has stopped working aswell - the dial is at max and I've read that the sender might be the issue here but are there any other things worth checking out?

Lastly - my Part time indicator light is lit, even when the car is in 2wd mode - this seems to also be a problem with the transfer mode sender (not the correct name) but I can't seem to find a replacement part to change it with.

Thanks and regards,
André

Yes, your oil sender is probably bad.

Thanks Do you know what the faulty thing is? Is it the "sender" on the transfer case? And I guess the only thing to check out is if it's driving in 2wd even though the part time 4wd light is on?

yeah i would make sure its not driving in 4. if it was i would guess that would be the linkage. if the light is stuck on but its in 2wd i would look into the electronics of the transfer case. i haven't looked into it so i cant be much help. good luck!

Alright - my first "stupid" question but how would I go about testing if it is in part time 4wd? Testing full time is easy but part time?

You need to have a multi-meter to do that test and I suggest you get one.

Yep, I've got one I was talking about the connector. Since i've spent basically 0 hours under the hood of a jeep, all the connectors are sort of unfamiliar to me

Nothing on the transfercase it self is electronic. The part time light is triggered by a vacuum switch located under the hood, passenger side down by the firewall mounted on the inner fender. Sounds like your front end is no disengaging.

Alright a few updates and a few more questions!

When i picked up the car, it was in 4wd part time - so no wonder the part time light was on. Stuck it in 2wd and the light turned off in a few seconds! Problem solved I guess!

The rear wiper and washer seems to be "broken" well, the rear arm is broken totally off but it's not moving at all - could it be a fuse/relay or are they connected to the front?

The headlights seems to be working now, at least the parking lights and the low beams but the high beams, is that a third pull out of the switch? Or how would you turn them on?

The idle is quite low, under 500rpm and i've read that the TB is something to check out. Is it just a few screws to disconnect and then go ahead and clean it out or is there some magical special way to go about it? Worth noting that the sparkplugs etc haven't been changed in a while but that shouldn't affect idling either - oh and the battery is shot aswell, doesn't crank the engine around so it needs a booster. But again, nothing that affects idling?

Also, I am missing a rear view mirror yet I can't seem to find on either in junkyards or on the web. I'm guessing they came with one or am I wrong with this car?

Don't count on that!! Replace the plugs with NGKs or Champion Coppers, new Belden wires and Premium cap and rotor from Napa.

Clean the throttle body for sure. Make sure the intake manifold bolts aren't loose.

Click on the "pink link" in my signature and do the procedures outlined in posts 1, 2, 3, and 4 for starters.
