Okay so monday put a new (rebuilt) starter in the jeep. Bought it at Advance the Worldwide brand. Been doing really good since then, no noises starts fast (well as fast as an 89 with a fuel check valve problem can be). Anyway today (wednesday) went to leave for the day and the starter is grinding intermittently while trying to turn over. Very hard to explain but something like;
crank crank grind crank grind, crank crank grind
You get the idea. Any thoughts that maybe it was just a junk starter in the first place? Any opinion is appreciated thanks.
Possible that it needs shimmed? It absolutely did not have any shims on it in the first place and it was the original starter that was pulled

XX2 ^^ what stev-o said..
*Was the old one grindin' too? I'd inspect the flywheel for damaged teeth.
*Is the solenoid on the starter itself? I know some jeeps have the solenoid on the body.. A bad solenoid could cause grinding too, kicking the bendix in and out.
