Xj will not start. Is my starter bad?
So last night at work, I get off and go to fire up my jeep and it cranks over very slow. Barely fast enough to start, very similar to a dead battery. Today I tried to start it to go to work and if cranked over and growled at me a couple times then nothing. Won't even click now. Touched a direct positive wire to the positive post on the starter and bam! Nothing... Is my starter fried like chicken or what? Sorry for the lengthy post guys. I'd love to hear your opinions

Have you tried to spark off the starter solenoid with a screw driver or something metal?
there are 3 posts on the solenoid, touch the one that the battery connects to and the small one together. if that doesn't make it start then it is bad starter.

Got it running
I had an old starter laying around, and actually broke the starter that was on it when I pulled it off. (Oops) i actually tested the starter that was originally on it once I pulled it off and it turned strong and fine and could not make it stall with a punch jammed up agains the shaft. (Starter was no good anyways. Was just curious why It wouldn't start my jeep) I wonder if maybe the connections inside the starter was going bad, because when I broke it it exposed the positive and ground lugs on the inside, under the plastic casing, that I could touch with jumper cables and make it turn but not without fiddling with it for a minute first

if the battery is good and the starter is good then you need to check the wire between them, since that is where a loss of amperage would happen. clean the terminals really good and tighten them down
