New to me 89 and a tranny question.
I just picked up this 89 turd to polish and I have a couple questions. First is what is this switch? I didnt have this in my93. Next, the po said he was running autozone tranny fluid in it, could I just drain it and replace it with the proper dex? I don't want to fully flush if I dont have to.

Dex/Merc fluid is what you want. Autozone's version is fine and just do a drain and fill as your AW4 has a plug. It has no "filter" but a screen.
Adjust your tV cable as shown in the link.

While you're familiarizing yourself with the earlier Renix Jeep, click on the link in my signature and do posts 1,3,4, and 5.
As for the switch on the dash, it switches programs in the Transmission Control Unit from Power to Comfort.
Your 93 had no switch and was defaulted to the Power mode.

Now, if your switch does not light up in Power mode, you have to check the 7.5 amp "trans" fuse in the fuse box. If the fuse is blown, or the light doesn't illuminate in the Power position, the switch is probably shorted or open.
Easy fix.
Bypassing the Power/Comfort Switch on a Renix Jeep
Remove and unplug the switch. In the harness are 3 wires One has a stripe, one is tan, and the other black. Make a 4" jumper wire with a male spade at each end. Plug one end in the cavity for the tan wire and the other in the cavity for the striped wire and you'll be in permanent Power mode. Stuff the harness back in and reinstall the switch for looks.
