I've searched this already and haven't found a situation exactly like this.

When I shift into reverse the reverse lights don't always come on, sometimes if I slightly pull the shifter back towards neutral and then let go of it they come on, and other times I have to go through park to reverse to drive to any other gear before they will come on.

What I know:

-Reverse light switch in tied in with the NSS.
-NSS switches are a bit pricey.

I also read the post about turning them to adjusting them but it just doesn't seem like that's what I need. I'm guessing I might need it cleaned/a new one?

Yeah as soon as I get a chance I'll pull it off and take a look. Maybe I'll also end up with a un-labeled switch on the dash

Clean your NSS, that should fix it. If cleaning doesn't work, get one from a junkyard donor XJ. The price of a new NSS is ridiculous.

Yeah I looked it up and had a jaw drop incident. It's not worth the cost of a new one.
