Yes, but hold out for a 231. 242's aren't all that great, IMO.

so what i have determined is both my transfer cases have the short shaft, my replacement transfer case is a 21 spline 231(year 87 or 88) and the one i need to replace is a 23 spline 231(year 1995). and as far as i can tell both cases should have the wide bearing but the problem i am having is determining when they started using the late cut gear.

That page is for a LOT of transfer cases, these things were built for a lot of companies over many years. Some of it is useless information to us as XJs did not come with NP247, etc.

As far as I can remember all NP231Js use the same part number input bearing, it'd be easy enough for someone at a computer to check a few parts catalogs to confirm. So swap the input gear and off you go!

^^ good advice. OP, let's trade, and I'll just rebuild your 231.

Newbie here with a 1995 Jeep Cherokee needing a transfer case; whines like a scalded cat! Where do I find the ID tag on the transfer case so that I can get the correct replacement. I have 250K on the 1995.

Thanks, Scotmick.
