Default Need help fixing my Cherokee

Hello,

I'm having trouble finding what's wrong with my Jeep. I have a 1988 Cherokee Laredo. Originally it would turn over and not start. I checked for spark and there's spark. I then sprayed starting fluid in to see if it would start with that while turning it over and it did. So I thought fuel problem and replaced the fuel pump and the fuel filter. After I replaced the fuel pump it turns over and will almost start or starts and then dies instantly. I also ended up replacing the CPS sensor because it was relatively cheap. I'm not quite sure what else it could be. I'm currently in the process of cleaning out the c101 connector. p.s. sorry if I don't know some things, I'm pretty much teaching myself all this. Any insight on what might be the problem?

Thanks, Riley

Since no one has chimed in yet, the first/best place to start is cruiser's site (cruiser54.com) for RENIX Jeeps like yours (and my 88 Laredo 2-door). Maybe you have seen it already as c101 cleaning or elimination is one of the things recommended. Also checking/cleaning grounds etc. Work through his tips.

The CPS sensor is very important that you use a Mopar unit - if you said it's "relatively cheap" you probably did not use a Mopar. Get the Mopar one - anything else is a crap shoot as to whether it will work correctly or not.

You might want to make sure that you put "Renix" or the year in the thread title so Cruiser will see it and jump in.

another thing could be the cam shaft position sensor. it could also go by the coil ignition pickup sensor. I had the same problem with my 96 jeep. everything i did let it run for one day then back to cranking but no starting. on my last thing i replaced the distributor cap, rotor and cam sensor and its worked flawlessly since.

and hopefully you got a good cpk like the other poster said get a mopar. the others can be cheap like 20 bucks but if your like me getting to it with fat fingers and such is more trouble than its worth to keep doing it when the cheap ones fail.

I cleaned out the c101 connector and the grounds that were listed on cruiser54.com and it's still having the same problem. I think the CPS sensor I got was this one from AutoZone; Duralast Crankshaft Position Sensor SU3228 $35.99. here's a video I took off what it's doing

TEST the CPS per the instructions on my site. We'll go from there.

Have you done Tips 1 through 5? If not, you need to.

I have done tips 1 and tips 2. I'm leaving for Thanksgiving break and will do 3-5 when I get back (About a week long) When I tested the CPS like it says on your website I don't get anything. Not sure if it's because of my cheap multimeter, if I was doing it wrong, or if the CPS is trashed. Also I do get a spark so doesn't that mean the CPS is generally fine?

I don't know I only know what I had to replace. I know the cam sensor for my 96 jgc limited was called the ignition coil pickup. autozone could not get it to come up under a cam sensor but part of the description for the ignition coil pickup said it was a cam sensor but a search for just a cam sensor on their system pulled up nothing.

As you go through your tests, don't rule out lack of Injector Pulse. You might be able to borrow / rent a NOID light test kit from somewhere.

Good observation. You have spark......CPS is likely fine.
