Set the pickup about 3/4" from the bottom of the pan. Where the pickup presses into the pump there is a spot where the material is almost crimped. Press all the way in first. Its only an interfecance fit not a press as someone was saying. A press is a full thousandth smaller, this goes in fairly easy. When it bottoms out on the pump, spot weld it to the pump body in two places. The pump is cast but just do two little rosettes and you will be fine. Be sure you lay your gasket on when you set the pickup, its about 1/4" thick, so it will throw ya off a little if you dont put in on. Right, see the spot where it bottoms out on the pump? Weld it right there. If you aren't a great welder be careful not to burn thru the pickup tube.Originally Posted by jeepsurfer1

Weld it about an inch above the yellow arrow on the right, right at the collar looking piece. Its also important to prime the system before you start it. You can make a priming tool out of an old dizzy driveshaft and a drill, if you have an oil press gauge go till you have good pressure. If you have good oil pressure u will need a drill with a lo gear.

Heres a pic of my oil priming tool. Made it from an old sbc dizzy, works for almost all applications. Engage the tang into the oil pump drive gear and the other to a good torque drill. You remove the distributor and do it thru that hole if you were unsure.
