Default Is my heater core bad?

Hey how’s it going ? I have a 2000 xj and turned the heat on and smelled a coolant smell for only a second the floor isn’t wet and every time I turn the heater on it only smells for a couple seconds is my heater core going?

Yep, sounds like it. It's probably just weeping a bit at this point, but it's the beginning of the end.

Before you decide to replace it loosen the two hoses at the firewall. Pull them away from the firewall until you can see the h/c connections. You may have to twist the hoses to break them loose. Tighten the hoses and see if that solves your issue. Seen the hoses leak around the connections and into the h/c box more than a few times. Don't cost anything to try it.
