Default 2000 Cherokee heater core leaking bad, need help!

hey guys

on top of my Nobus problem. i have a leaking heater core. fogging up windows, puddling on the passengers floor.. etc.

i have no way to afford a OEM one... 500$ just for the core.

local autozone and advance have the 65$ ones.. online has more options..

whats a good replacement that wont leave the cab cold from poor heat transfer, leak next year.. etc.

help!!!!! i need to do this soon. getting hard to drive with all the windows open so i can breathe and keep the windshield defogged.

thanks
-Rob

I buy my aftermarket stuff from Napa. Usually better quality than the others.

Have you ever replaced a heater core on an XJ before? If not, review the procedure in a manual and reserve some time. It is a tedious process.

Bypass heater core for now so you have time to research your options.

It's still 100+ degrees here so you might not need the heater yet in your locale.

Breathing coolant fumes is poisonous.

dont know where your at, but im in central NH, getting into the season of, Heat in the morning, AC in the noon, Heat at night. HA HA HA

best deal i can find is a connection with a guy at a Chrysler dealer, 373$ for OEM or Ready-Aire from advance for 60. spectra from autozone, 65, napa/bond is also spectra for 50. online misc. makes for the 50-80$ range.

i dont want to spend a day to put in a junk core and get no heat out of it or have it leak in a year.. but oem is dam expensive..

and coolant fumes. try it with Heavy duty ELC, thats a hole new stank!

Get the $50 core from NAPA. I've installed the NAPA cores in two of my vehicles, they've been fine.

I agree with Radi. I'd pay the $50 for the Napa unit. $373 is insane for a Jeep heater core!

$373 is not bad. Retail cost at the same dealer, is $544

Both sums, more then what i want to pay for the "Just Empty Every Pocket" thats sitting in my driveway.

You should be fine with a $50 unit. Any subtle differences in design will likely be negligible in terms of heat output.

Here's something to consider though...

Getting to that heater core is an all day job that requires removing most of the dash. Also, the evap coils on Cherokees are commonly known to develop leaks. I'd seriously consider replacing both while you're in there. You can get a heater core from Rock Auto for $33-$50 and an evap core for you AC is around $60.

Lastly, here are some suggestions I gave to a similar question on what you should do while you're in there and things you should prepare yourself with.
