The weld between a fairly new factory style muffler and the cat convertor failed. I thought I saw somewhere in the past that a clamp was now on the market that can hold two pipes together like in the situation I have. What are those clamps called exactly and who sells 'em? Thank you.

There is no clamp that is going to seal those pieces together.

You should take it to a shop and have it repaired properly.

I found 'em. Just cut off (or grind off the welds) and I'll be good to go.

Been there, done that. If that doesn't hold, you can go to your local auto store and get something like
this this
but longer. A tool like
this this
can also help when trying to reuse exhaust pieces. If you want to reuse what you have, get that old clamp off, drop the muffler so you can grind that weld off easier and then go tot he auto store to see what kind of reducer/ adapters they have and I'm sure you could get a good fit. If you get the muffler down, you could take it to a shop to have them weld on a new extension piece.

Not an idea fix imo, but a good interim solution. Definitely need to cut the weldment off. Double check the measurements on both sides too since them make a version that steps up or down in size to accomodate slip joints.

Both pipes are measuring 60 mm on the outside. That u-clamp on the CAT is going to have to stay, too rusty to mess with if you ask me.

I'd cut the bolt on the u-clamp and pull it off. It's not doing anything since it's welded on the other side, and you probably need the room for that band clamp.

Removed the clamp on the rear of the CAT (which was not doing anything) by using WD-40 and a breaker bar. Then I removed both hangers from the tail pipe. Finally, using an angle grinder, Dremel tool, and hand file I smoothed off the bumpy welds. Clamp should arrive via Amazon in about a week. In the future, I don't expect to put much faith in butt welds.

Connected the tail pipe and muffler using new clamp (advertised as 60mm size). I am not going to say the repair is 100% gas tight, but seems to be pretty close. The clamp was 3.5" long, so we have 1.75" clamped on each end.

Installed clamp muffler to CAT

By "extra wide" I thought an inch 1.5" maybe, but that's in a different league altogether: very impressive. As to whether it's gas tight, it might soot up, but mightn't be a bad idea to loosen it a little & thumb some exhaust assembly paste into the ends & re-tighten before it dries.

I have used these, they hold my cat , very good, but I replaced the nut and bolts on them with higher grade as the threads stripped, cheapo bolt and nut, but the rest 9f the clamps seems to be well made, solid, no leaks, no rust.
