Default Muffler went out. . .

Good idea just to cut it off or would that cause problems down the line ?

Well, besides the fact that it will be too loud and you'll die of carbon monoxide poisoning if you don't route the exhaust out to the back... No, it won't cause problems. Buy a glasspack or a flowmaster and weld it in where your stock muffler goes. The jackass who owned my keep before me took the cat with it. It has two inline glasspacks where the old cat and muffler would have been.

^^^ Hahahaha that's awesome.... probably figured hey I took off two muffler, I'll put two back on....D.A. anyhow I ran with no muffler for a while... my pipe broke right in front of the cat. I did not die and I did not get a ticket. Not fond of smelling like exhaust though. I wouldn't recommend it. Like the Cherokee man said its not the healthiest thing you can do for yourself.

i used to live in cali, and some people will fall you if your exhaust does not pass the rear axle, cause it says it has to in the CA regulation unless it came stock that way. or you could just put a pipe in its place and clamp it on there, that would solve it for now, wouldn't be to bad. i would get a flowmaster though. i have ripped off my muffler plenty of times, and run it over, and dropped it down a 100' cliff, that thing keeps on truckin. cause it doesn't have any fiberglass in it and is all metal design.

I just replaced my muffler and tailpipe. The muffler was rattling inside, and was only about 1-1/2 years and less than 10K miles old. I managed to get it off the cat, but had to cut the tailpipe (original) to get it out. I started it and while it was kinda loud straight from the cat, it wouldn't have been obnoxious with a pipe just to replace the muffler.

I put a Magnaflow on with a oem type tailpipe, and it isn't any louder than the POS the garage had put on for inspection. The Magnaflow is straight through with a louvered core wrapped with SS wool. I was afraid it might be pretty loud, but its not.

So are there any pitfalls to running without a cat and two mufflers? I live in a state that does not require emissions testing

Why don't you just run 1 muffler? I would if I was in that state.

Don't remove your cat and talk about it on this forum. It's against the law and the website rules. No negative effects, really. Better mpg and slightly better performance.

Just don't remove your downstream O2 sensor if you have one...

I will reiterate: do NOT talk about removing your cat in the forums. If a moderator sees your post, you only get one chance. Farmers around here remove them because the cat can start a fire from heat buildup. It's the hottest part under the vehicle.
