maybe 30mpg is wrong, but 25mpg is just fine. it's been proven by more than 1 person that an I6 is a better solution than an I4 in these cherokees for fuel mileage. it's called power to weight ratio...and your I4 is just about maxed at 25mpg.

honestly, with the right cam in it, you could reduce your torque curve so that your torque meets hp at a lower RPM, bringing the "sweet spot" of the motor down from 2200-2500rpm closer to, say 2000-2200 rpm. with that done, the right tire size and gear ratio, there's no reason a 4.0 shouldn't be able to get 20mpg city, and 28mpg highway.
I am fully aware that these jeeps COULD get that kind of mileage, i never said they couldnt. But i'm pretty sure no one around here is going to put in the time and money to make one get that kind of mileage. If every one of these jeeps got 25 city then you wouldnt see so many of them on craigslist for sale as people would LOVE to have a nice, dependable, capable, SUV thats good on gas. And yes i'm sure a stock height cherokee may get close to 25 MPG in some cases, but how many people on this forum set up their rides for MPG? Not many. Most are either underpowered due to too large of tires and improper gearing or overgeared to the point where the engine runs at 4k at 60. You find me one of those jeeps that get 25mpg, and I'll give you a cookie.

and my 4 banger wasnt maxed out at 25 mpg, if i had given it a better flowing intake/exhaust and downgraded to some 225s as they came stock with, then i could have gotten 30 out of her easily

Mine is a stock '01 4.0 4WD and city is about 14-15 driving like grandma since new head put on, dont have numbers for hwy. Have noticed it runs "cool" after a head swap, wonder if it's not getting out of warm up mode and dumping in too mch fuel??? Next thing to look into I guess.

Hmmm 1972, gas was 35 cents a gallon and minimum wage was $1.60 an hour. Guess it's all relative. Damn I'm old!

Wow. I've never gotten less than 16.5, even with just in town driving (lead foot). On my trip back from LA to New Hampshire, I managed 23 for the whole trip. On the highway, I get high 25-28 around 60 mph, 22mpg at 70.

I just did the acetone trick, and am still getting about 19mpg around town, but it seems to make a difference in performance, encouraging some lead foot.

Our 95 HO. averaged about 18mpg.
I got an 88 GMC S15 Jimmy, with a 2.8 v6 and it got 18mpg too. Only reason I mention it is because the same V6 was used in Jeeps too.
The Renix, I have not checked the mpg on it yet. I'll have to use a GPS to do it as the speedo is 5 mph off wit the 31x10.50x15.

What full injectors would you recommend?

95% tire inflation, car washed and waxed, synthetic oil (Royal Purple), high flow CAI. I get about 25mpg at 65, 27mpg at 60, and about 28-29 at 55 mph. Travelling between Seabrook and Manchester (about 45 minute drive), I average low 20's. I could probably get that into the high 20's if I didn't mind cars bunching up behind me.

There's also a big difference between fuels, and I seem to get the best with Valero, for some reason. If I had a stick, chipped my engine, and really hypermiled it, I could probably average 23-25 everywhere.
