Default MPG!!!

I just want to here from everyone on what kind of gas mileage there cherokee is getting. I have a 2001 XJ 4x4 auto with the 4.0L. In the city I get about 10-12 and the highway I get about 22. I was just wondering if this is normal. I love driving my jeep but the city mileage is killing me seeing that I do mostly that.

Hate to break the bad news to you, but that is pretty normal. How much stop and go does your city driving consist of? Maybe shut the engine off at the long red lights, don't sit and idle for long periods.

while idle consumes fuel, it isn't idling that really kills mileage. it's acceleration that kills it.

and, in my experience, that's not normal. I do mixed driving and get 19mpg average, 22 highway.

do a tune up. don't accelerate like the devil is riding your ****. there's no point racing from one stop light to the next stop light.

cap and rotor.

fuel injector cleaner.

are any check engine codes/lights coming up? a bad 02 sensor WILL wreck gas mileage

Your fuel rail feeds fuel to the fuel injectors. Try running injector cleaner like he said.

Maybe an aftermarket air cleaner like a K&N or Spectre to let it breath better.

I think you meant to say coil over plug, not fuel rail. All of them that are fuel injected have fuel rails. lol. I get 17mpg consistently. I'm going to do a fuel injector swap here soon, and we'll see if that makes a difference. The biggest change is your driving style.

Yeah 2000-2001 came with coil packs. In my 01 i got about 12-13 mpg city. after full tune up and easy on the gas i have gotten about 15 mpg once or twice. But its usauly still around 13-14 city. But i wouldnt be too upset, you get much better than i get on the highway, i get 19 at best.

I'm averaging about 16 - 17 MPG average, which includes about 50/50 highway - city driving with my '98, 4.0l

When I'm mostely highway it'll easily go over 20 MPH.

I should hope so! Mine will do like 75-80 on the highway! j/k I get what you're saying but I couldn't leave that one alone!

To the topic though. I live in a hilly city and rarely get out on the highway, but I get about 16-18 in town and 25-28 or so on the highway.

4.0 or 4 banger? Because I don't know what everyone else's experience is, but that seems way to good to be true for a Cherokee.

4.0. The in town mileage is accurate for sure as 90% of my driving is in town, and I do my mileage at every fill(I'm also super **** and fill up at the same station and the same pump every time). Only taken it on the highway a couple of times and it seems to me it was around 23-25(28 is a bit high after a second look), but I don't have a lot of data so a true hwy average isn't there yet. But I will have one next spring. I'll be driving from Superior, WI(on Lake Superior, MN/WI border) to NC in March, and doing a trip to CO in June, so I'll have a clearer idea, although it will be loaded with 3-4 guys, 4-6 kayaks, and all the camping gear that goes with that, and probably a mountain bike, so maybe not....
