Default Might buy an 01 with blown head gasket... Thoughts?

Found an 01 classic on CL today for 950/bo. 137k and he claims blown head gasket. Just waiting for him to call so I can check it out. I would like to fix the motor, maybe do a small lift and tires, them turn around and sell it. My girlfriend would kill me if I had two.

Anyways, aside from finding out how long it's been blown and checking the fluids fur any cross contamination and the consistency of the oil, etc. how can I be sure this motor is worth saving? I obviously can't start to tear it down in the guys driveway. Any pointers would be appreciated. I'll give updates when I know more

Default the 200-2001 modle

the 2000-2001 model have a problem with there heads cracking. I would bet that that is ur problem. They are expensive and some say ur better off replacing the motor.

Because of the casting defect in the 0331 factory head, which is what all 00-01 XJs were equipped with, the head cracks far more often than the head gasket fails.

But certainly, either are a possibility.

Instead of reinventing the wheel here, read this thread. It is your homework on the 0331 head problem. You need to understand it. Completely.

Plan on at minimum inspecting the bearings and also the crank and cam if you find bearing problems...unless you KNOW they haven't been damaged by antifreeze contamination. Just because the oil is clean....it may well have been changed recently.

Didn't buy it. It was in fact a blown head gasket, but the body was in fair shape at best. Lots of surface rust and damaged drivers side rear door and quarter panel. After everything I'd have to put into it, the profit margin would be so small that it wouldn't be worth the time, effort, and money. Thanks to everyone who replied and helped.

Yep, you dodged the bullet on that one.

Now you need to have a talk with the girlfriend.
