So i took my xj to my mechanic to fix my oil leak, apparently I have multiple leaks and he says "everything that can leak is leaking". So he would have to take the engine out to replace all the gaskets and such. His estimate 1200-1400 bucks.......is that about what I should expect? I don't have that much so I guess ill start saving. I think I'm gonna go ahead and replace the valve cover and oil pan gaskets myself and see about my oil filter adapter. Maybe I can slow the leaks down until I get enough money for that.

Im no mechanic by a long shot but that sounds kinda suspect to me. If we are just talking oil here, there isn't but so many places it can be leaking. I don't think. The valve cover, the o rings in the oil filter mount, the oil pan and the front & rear main seals. I've never replaces the main seals on any vehicle but from what I usually see written about them you can get access to them by removing the oil pan. I'm sure there may be other areas but I don't think you need to remove an engine to replace them. Plus if you can ever get it clean under there you may find you don't have to replace EVERY one as he is telling you.

There is really no reason to remove the engine for any leaks. Thats way to much money, you can find a good running motor for half that. Save your money and just get a used or rebuilt motor with no leaks.

The only thing that may require removing the engine would be the rear main seal, but even then you can do it just by removing the oil pan. You need another mechanic, this guy is taking you for a ride and you're making his boat payment.

Start at the top. Valve cover. Then the oil filter adapter seals. Maybe the distributor gasket? Oil sender? Do those as needed in that order. You may find out that your oil pan and rear main seal aren't even leaking. Probably the other leaks were just dripping off that area because it's the lowest spot on the engine.

Yeah....... Find a new mechanic. That's a lot of damn money for replacing some gaskets. I got every one of my gaskets replaced by my mechanic for 300 just because i didnt have the tools or the know how when i first got my rig. You can get gaskets at any parts store really. But don't cheap out on gaskets, don't buy cork or paper. Get quality rubber Fel pro gaskets. You'll be glad you spent the extra pennies
around my area you can find half way decent jeeps for that price! thats why i never trust mechanics and do my own work to my rig, you get to know it in and out and if you mess something up, you learn from your mistakes. if i brought my rig to a mechanic for every problem i had...i could probably buy a brand new vehicle. off the lot. 2013 model too.

We are here to help! Plus, you can spend the money you saved from not going to that rip-off of a mechanic on a lift and tires!
