I have a jeep 2.5, i have had it since 2009 and its been a pain. It came with electrical probs etc, thats another story!
The urgency is that i have a hydraulics engineer friend and we scratch each others back and he just fixed the core plug ( never knew they existed) on the jeep. He has been working around other jobs so its been off the road now for around 3 weeks. I got a bit frustrated at being trapped and i have horses so its been tough, and i just waded in at the deep end and tried to finalise the repairs myself just so i can get out of this situation where i feel dead isolated and confined.
well I running when it was towed and put into gear...and it had some oomph which was fun! but it wonuld not start itself. The ticking was going great but it would not just do that final phase into running state. Gosh this is hard! So anyway it was the filter thing so its on a bracket and its got the metal top and then filter and a bowl with connectectors like electrical..and its got deisel in it. I took the bottom wire things off then the black pipes one says in and then i kept them upright so not to drip deisel. I took it in and cleaned the plastic bowl and dried it then did the deisel put the new round black washer thing seal i think. Then i struggled to remove the old filter from the metal top. I used pliers to hold and it came off. Put new one on and then filled the little bowl nd joined it all up and went to put it on the jeep. So i put it all together how it was and i went to try start it and there was more life and it really tried and it nearly went and i could hardly see for the grey smokey stuff. So i ran inside. I waited a bit, and then just tried again and it wants to start, and the smokey thing is gone, but it just keeps trying, i have to turn the key off cos i dont want to do any more damage! The mechanic friend (whom i have not told about my repair job attempt) said he will be here tonight to do the filter as it gets done in situ and i will not be able to safely remove filter - i have just gone along with him saying ok, ok see u l8r.
Do I take it off really quick and put all old stuff back and pretend that i know nothing? and just kick myself for wasting an entire day just to get out and go shopping! Or have i buggered it completely? or have i got to do some techie things only car and jeep folk and mechanics know about?
Can anyone help....Be blunt and honest -if i am in the Manure just say it, I have about 2 hours to resolve or admit it! obviously i dont want to admit defeat for reasons of pride etc.. thanks so much for any help at all.

Ummmmmmmmmm......What?

I was reading your post, and frankly am at a loss as to what you are trying to convey.
hope your mech friend can resolve for you, but if you were to describe the parts and issue and symptoms more clearly, I would be pleased to assist.
I am just a wee bit confused.

Probably best to just be honest with him. Sounds like he has his hands full as it is, and might waist time before he sees that you already went in there. Good Luck!

In my opinion I would show your friend exactly what you have done. It would be a disservice otherwise. If the issue was something you did and didn't tell him then your friend would have to poke around until he finds it. If you just tell him he can double check your handy work.
The black pipes with wires thing sounds like a fuel filter... I will admit I don't know much about diesel engines but I do know if you get air in the fuel line they are a b**** to start again. Most systems have a transfer fuel pump to pump diesel to a high pressure injection pump. If there is air in the high pressure pump it isn't going to pressurize the diesel... thus no starting...The fuel system may just need the air to be bled out.
Good luck!

Got a lucky break, he cancelled. Whew....that was close! Well i tried it again and it turned over for a second then then tailed off. I pumped the little plastic rod at the top of unit that i replaced. It is the fuel filter part i replaced but I took off the whole unit which seems to be in three parts.
The top metal piece which bolts to a plate nearfar end of engine. It has got two little pipes that come out and one is marked "in" and thats got the plastic screw top which when loosened pulls up an attatched rod with deisel in it. Then the fuel filter which i needed, and this is attatched to a clear plastic bowl which has deisel in it. The bottow of this bowl has 2 plugs which would seem to me to be electrical. I was scared that i had put the pipes back on the wrong in and out lines. But the battery is still good and i should be qble to fix in the morning. Maybe. I will call him in the morning and confess if it doesn't go. It runs ok if you tow it and put it in gear. many thanks, all help is greatly received.

I am pretty sure the little clear bowl "thingy" should not have fuel in it. Thats part of your water separator and will show when you have water in the fuel. Lastly it sounds like you might have a glow plug problem. Also when you try to start it you should turn the key on for a few seconds to let the glow plugs heat up before starting.

It won't start till all the air is bleed out of the injectors a diesel will not prime itself like a gas powered motor, injectors need to be cracked open to prime.
