If you download the parts catalogs for your Jeep and the ones in
the junkyard, you can see which parts can be used on your
Jeep if ever you need something. http://xjjeeps.com/

You wouldn't want to replace the rear with a 27 spline since it is a weaker axle.

you could be able to tell by spinning the tyre/wheel hub and see what direction the opposite axle rotates...or take off the cover and look

its my understanding many/most Jeep Chrysler 8.25 are open diffs (I could be wrong, seems stupid to have an open rear diff in an XJ)

My 8.25 had the factory limited slip. I would rather have an open differential, so you can put a lunchbox locker in. I had to swap to an open carrier to put my Spartan in.

You can put some lunch box lockers in limited slip diffs. I know for a fact that power trax ( I think that's spelt correctly) makes one for a limited slip 8.25 carrier.

Default UPDATE**

So I went to my local junkyard and looked at the Four Jeep Cherokees a 95 and 99 and two 2000s. The 95 had the tail lights I needed for my 96. It has the 3:55 Chrysler 8.25 rear end. But the question I have is it had two tags on it one small tag that just had numbers like 0325 stamped about it and the other one I couldn’t read. Here is the build sheet from the Vin number. If it is a limited Slip, would the build sheet have LOD next to the 355 ratio? I was unable to spin the tires because it was sitting on the ground. The 99 was not a limited slip rear but had a sweet set of stock aluminum wheels! I may have to go back and get them for $25 apiece.
