What's the reason for replacing the lifters?

Oil pressure ok? Engine oil previously not changed regularly and excessively gummed up on the inside of the engine?

Perhaps you're on the right track.

I had to replace the lifters in my CJ7 a while back due to them not pumping up properly. The head was clean but down by the lifters in the block it was all sludged up, especially in the back. It was well worth an afternoon of labor for a quieter engine.

While you're in there obviously look everything over.....pushrods, rockers, pistons, etc.

Good luck.
