So I am upgrading my stock bulbs in my instrument panel, HVAC, defroster and rear window switches with LEDs. Does anyone know how many bulbs I'll need to do this. I don't want to change every bulb in the dash, just the ones that are on when you pull the headlight switch to the "on" position, if that makes sense.

 

I would have figured by now an answer to this question.
Since most of the lighting in my XJ has been switched over I too would like to use SMD/LED for the inst. panel.

My quest has been to find the instructions to pull the panel out.
When I do get this out I'll have a bulb count for ya....

I just did this bout 2 weeks ago. It's was stupid easy. You will need 5 for the Guage panel 2 for hvac and 1 for each switch. Also 1 for the gear shift and 1 for the 4 wheel drive lever

 

what all led numbers did you get ? i have a 2001 so i am sure they are the same

 

I used superbrightleds.com I got t5 neo wedge for the gauges and then t4 neo wedge for the hvac and switches. The number just means the size in mm. Fit no problem. I don't remember for the shifters but the website will tell you.

 

There's a guy in the member classified section who sells full LED upgrade kits for your dash lights. I'm too lazy to go find it, but it's either in the Accessories or Miscellaneous section.

 

It took some doing and I've built a list of LED's for the 1992 XJ dash.
I am by no means an expert on LED conversions. Just a guy sharing experiences.



There are five bulbs for instrument lighting shown with a white dot on the twist in holder. These are originally the "194" bulb with a blue sleeve to cool down the color. Those were replaced with the 921. The upper three are also bare 194's for the brite-lite and turn signal indicators. To avoid any hassles with the flashers, I left these alone. However, on the indicator side all the existing 74 mini bulbs were also replaced with PC74's.

I also replaced all the interior lights with white LED's that really make the XJ look 20 years younger. I used six of the flat 5630 for the front seat footwells and the over head map lights for the Larado overhead console. And one 1210 for the overhead cargo lite.

Remember that the LEDs are polarity sensitive, so check the function of each piece before buttoning things up.
