Default jeep keeps overheating

I went off roading with my jeep and realized it started to get a little too close to over heating. Since then my jeep at a stop light it slowly creeps up to overheating but back down to half way. The side of my engine block was wet from oil seeping so I replaced the valve cover gasket. Nothin changed. Then I changed my thermostat and thermostat housing and yet again nothing. I got under the car qnd my oil filter and oil pain looked really wet from oil. Any ideas anyone?

flush your coolant and test your mech fan. should spin easy cold by hand and hard by hand when hot.

First off, does your oil look milky or coolant have oil in it? If so, prob head gasket.

If not, Overhaul your cooling system. Tstat (prefferably oem), water pump, clutch fan, flush (if not replace) rad, rad cap, hoses, check heater core flow, swap temp sending unit(s). I just went through all of this myself.

There is really no reason to just do it all. Its not that expensive compared to how important it is. And not that time consuming to do it all. Dont nickel and dime it to death.

It slightly overheats so must be a cracked head or headgasket.

Mine slightly overheated for three months. It was a clogged rad. Not a cracked head nor gasket. Saying "must be" and "xj cooling system" just dont work.

Most likely a cooling system component.

If it overheats ONLY while idling and NOT while driving on a highway, the #1 suspect is the fan clutch. Often overlooked, inexpensive and easy to replace.

Also review every single cooling system component whenever you have any kind of overheating issue. Radiator, radiator cap, water pump, fan clutch, thermostat, fresh coolant.

The oil pan being wet with oil is not related to your overheating. Common spots for oil leaking on the 4.0 are valve cover gasket (which you replaced), rear main seal and oil filter adapter gaskets.

It slightly over heats to about right before red. It does look like my oil filter adapter is leaking. I noticed that the electric fan isn't kicking on. I'm not sure if its the rad cuz the coolant keeps goin in but its not leaking. My oil leak doesn't look milky either

You stated that you went off roading and then you started to over heat. Were you playing in a lot of mud? I had a buddy that got into the mud and filled up his radiator core so bad that it blocked off 50% or more of the core and because he didn't wash the mud out immediately it cooked and was really hard to get out.
Cleaned the mud out and it was good to go.

OP has a 93 so he doesn't have to worry about that. Plus cracked head is a symptom of a bad cooling system not the cause of it.

OP: you say you keep adding coolant to it? Like how much and how often. Just because you cant see the leak on the ground doesnt mean its not leaking. Sounds like to me you have to redo the entire system

Overhauling your cooling system is time and money well spent on an essential component of your rig. And it should fix the problem.

Unless it's a cracked head or blown gasket.
