yep, the uni body is prone to rusting in that location because it is directly over the Cat so not only does it experience the rust like the rest of the unibody, it has to endure harsh temperatures. I just had to weld a piece on mine.

atleast its under the passengers seat and not the drivers. your friends would never know you have an ejection seat.

I think every XJ should have the carpet out to rhino line cuz you find alot of interesting rust under the carpet

I actually have had that happen! Ooch! Tack weld in the sheet metal and go to a muffler shop and have them move the exhaust a little lower.

good luck

thats a legitamate idea but I would just get it fully welded snce the passenger and rear seat are so close and its a unibody frame. you should get it welded for structural integrity.

and one thing about rhino lining the interior, I grinded the whole interior and the rear hatch cargo area rhino line held up but up by the front seats it always breaks off in chunks from putting my club down there or heat from the tranny. I have started spray painting it with gloss black and that works great with way less cost. rustoleum gloss black

Are there any problems with just riveting a piece of sheet metal over it, and using a thin layer of jb weld or gasket maker around the edges to seal out the fumes?

yes there is such high heat there that it will trash any kind of epoxy or jb wled stuff. also if there are any gaps its really loud. get it welded no matter what. the passenger seat is rite there and if you were in an accident with your friend shotgun would you want 3 or 4 solid bolts on the passenger seat?

welding may take a little more but its worth it. i patched mine for about a month before I got it welded
