HAHAHA, You're probably right! But really, I have wondered if it is something to monitor conversations... but who knows
I checked when I first bought it...no camera, but could be a microphone

yes, its the keyless entry system.
i didnt have remotes when i got my xj either, but i ended up buying one off ebay for like 20 bucks.
not completely worth it for me to be honest, BUT that is mostly because i always hit the lock button on the door when i get out and the auto unlock on the door doesnt work.
with that said, the range of the remote leaves much to be desired. as it is an infrared system, you have to point the remote directly at the sensor for it to work. not like the radio frequency systems that are utilized on more modern vehicles.
and by the way, you would not have to pay anyone to program it for you. you can do it yourself in about 10 seconds:
-turn key to on position (not starting it, just so the radio comes on etc)
-hit the lock button on the door
-immediately after doing this press and hold the lock button on the remote (aiming at the sensor) until the doors unlock. should only be 5 seconds or so until it does this.
-you are now programmed.

I'm not planning on getting the remote for it unless it is dirt cheap... Like that would ever happen. I'm workin on gettin some more stuff for it, just ordered some nut strips so I can install my hitch (have) and shackle relocation boxes (getting soon) then i gotta fix some holes in my floor pan above the muffler...Probably should fix this real soon, but gotta wait til i get borrow a welder, maybe I'll just temporarily fix it w/some sheet metal and silicone/something similar to hold in place and make seal. Think that'll hold for a little?
