Intermitent speedometer
I have a 89 xj sport. NP231 transfer case. The speedometer does not work and the odometer does not work. The tach does work. There is a manual cable from the T-case to the dash that spins like it should. From there I think it goes electronic. All fuses ok.
Has anyone had a problem like this with a solution?
The speedo will work on occasion. A loose wire maybe?

Are you having any other problems? How does your battery gauge look? This happened to me when my alternator went

I had a similar problem with a past vehicle of mine. I fixed it by taking out the circuit board behind the instrument cluster and using a soldering iron to reheat all the points of contact on the board. Over time these beads can crack and cause a poor connection which usually results in intermittent functionality. I would suggest looking for any hairline fractures that you can see, it also wouldn't hurt to reheat all points though. Hope this helps!

Cool

pull the instrument cluster out of the dash and look for areas on the circuit ribbon that are discolored or black, many of these older ones had a burn through condition which would kill the speedo
