1996 Cherokee check engine light?
I got a 96 Cherokee, 5 speed, inline 6, 140,000 miles. It runs perfectly with no issues, this morning the speedometer stopped working and after 10 minutes of driving it stalled, after doing a once over and starting it up again the check engine light came on. It still runs great, could a bad speed sensor cause the engine to stall and turn the check engine light on? Going to replace the speed sensor asap, wondering if this is the issue.
Thanks
Thanks

Have the CEL read and let us know what the code is. Don't go throwing money at it hoping to fix the problem. Obviously the CEL is on for a reason so find out what the code is and then go from there.

Can also he a wiring issue. I forgot if they moved the VSS over the years. On my 01, I ripped the wires from the sensor on the TC tail housing. Had no Speedo for a bit. Didn't cause the jeep to turn off. I feel you have a short issue. Check possibly your OPSU wiring. My sending unit wiring was fraid and it caused my Speedo to jump around. Also cause the jeep to shut off when two of the wires crossed. Also yes, check the wiring at the VSS itself. Again, not sure if 96 had it in the tranny or the TC but now you got some homework to do. Check your wiring before ordering the sensor. Because if by chance it is the wiring, sensor ain't fixing nothin.
