Default interior trim screws

Just a word to the wise. Those nice truss-head phillips screws that jeep uses for everything that's trim. I just stopped at my local Jeep dealer and just for kicks, asked if they had any. Nope. No longer a serviceable part from Chrysler! So, any time you take something apart be sure to keep the screws! Even when parting something out, they are going to get scarce after a while. I need about a dozen to put stuff back in my XJ, so I'm going to be a junkyard scrounge! I'll just hit one XJ and leave the rest for other guys.

I find it hard to believe they are not avail through FCA ...although I don't know the specific screws you're talking about. Most of that stuff was standardized a long time ago ..and used on vehicles across the company to varying degrees, including minivans etc.

You can buy most auto trim screws at Napa and other places like Autozone or especially a body-shop supply store. I have bags of different autobody screws for different makes, etc. But if you're going to the Junkyard anyway, that's a much cheaper way to go. They treat them like they're made of gold and you would have probably balked when you saw the price. The dealer probably did you a favor.

I really haven't looked anyplace else. I just happened to be driving past my local dealer and nobody was waiting, so on a whim, I pulled in. The parts guy looked up the specific screw for the hatch trim on my XJ and showed me the computer screen. "No longer a service part." He did say to try a body shop supply store. I posted this as soon as I got home. End of story.

Go you your local Napa. They should have a big loose leaf binder with all sorts of body type hardware in it. They are actual pieces. Making it easy to see. No guarantee but I have found a few things I needed for my Jeep there.

These? You can find them at NAPA and Advance Auto. usually next to, or near, the vacuum lines.

I got mine at advance, in packs. They were pretty cheap. They have a few size variants, so it can be helpful to take examples with you to compare.

Yeah....I haven't figured out how to resize my photos yet either. Wait! Let's not get into that now. Those are exactly the ones. Mine measure 1" long.

If you don't find exactly what you need betting you will find something that will work. I have found exact matches for the clips behind door panels, the speed nuts for my bumpers, the thread cutting nuts for my muffler heat shield, the plastic push pins for my rubber mat under the front of my Jeep, and these little screws which secured the longest plastic piece of my factory running boards to the metal support underneath.

Omix still produces them. Possibly Crown and Dorman. Team Cherokee sells several different ones for sure.

Ya know, the more I got thinking I doubt very seriously the AMC or Chrysler speced out a screw just for their interior trim. I'll bet some engineer was looking thru a fastener catalog and said to his secretary "Get in touch with these people and see what kind of a contract we can get on large quantities." I would have loved to be the company that filled that contract!

I'll bet they feed nice thru an assembly line screw gun as well. I've had to fix a few of those.

Interesting story; My dad had a Beechcraft B18 twin and he made several midnight flights to the Singer Sewing Machine factory with special screws because of someone not ordering on time. The agent told him he had to get them there by midnight or they shut the line down!

You are not kidding. Just downloaded that catalog and spent 10 minutes looking at every page. All 900 of them. LOL. Lots of stuff I could see coming in handy on a Jeep at one time or another. That rack and big loose leaf binder that you see in the beginning of the catalog is very similar to what you would find at a Napa when looking for body hardware and whatnot.

One of the newspaper distributors who work with me just quit working at NAPA and he confirms they have a whole bunch of different stuff. I'll just pop in when I get the time.
