So I知 in the process of swapping interior bulbs to LED. I wanted to use white in the HVAC panel. But the bulbs are a different size than I thought so all I have is red that will fit. The red light doesn稚 transmit well through the white or blue diffuser that is used on some of the XJ interior. My question is if anyone has ever removed the diffusing material on the inside of the HVAC panel. I知 not sure if it値l be too bright. I知 thinking maybe remove it then paint it with a transparent red for the warm side and and a more transparent blue for the cool side. Not sure what I would do for the fan speed indicators. Maybe I値l try it first how it is. I知 sure it値l be fine at night.
Actually now that I’m looking. It seems as though the blue and red for the blend adjustment is actually molded in the face. So are the vent selections for the cool side. And the other areas look like they have white molded in. I would just hate to ruin a perfectly good spare part. It’s the only spare one I have.
Soo couldn’t wait and I started scraping. I think each inset area is painted black around each of the colored areas. Like the outline of the numbers and pictures can be scraped off if I’m not careful. May not be worth trying to do.
Just remember this. LED lights only transmit a single wavelength of light, except white ones. I put green LEDs in my WJ cluster and my red numbers and needles turned brown or went out. Mixing different color light is different than mixing paint pigment colors. In a science lab where color filters are more perfect, you can put a red filter on a lamp and get only red wavelengths of light thru it. Then put a blue filter in front of the red one, and nothing gets thru.
If I were you, I'd buy soft white LEDs. BTW, I scratched my mode switch with my thumbnail and now white light comes thru in that spot.
