Question I'm baffled

After I took the trans out of my jeep and was reinstalling a new torque converter I found that the crankshaft has almost 2 teeth worth of play at the flex plate. The motor sounded great before and didnt have any ticks or other odd noises, should I rebuild the motor or should I ignore it till it shows to be a problem.

I would expect a bit of play at the chains, but none from the damper, as it should be held solid by the belt, so I would check your damper, they need replacing as the rubber degrades

I think we need the OP to clarify what he means by 2 teeth of play.

The torque converter bolt holes thru the flexplate are not holes but ovals. If they are not tight yet, the torque converter will rotate slightly as compared to the flexplate. I also preposition those bolts at the end stops of the ovals in the direction of normal rotation

With out the torque converter installed just grabbing the flex plate and trying to rotate it. If you were to mark a tooth on the ring gear and a corresponding mark behind it on the motor. Before it feels like the engine is tuning the marks would be off by 2 teeth.

Others with more experience than me can comment, but I dont recall any motors having "freeplay" at the ring gear,

afaic, they are held tight by the bearings, seals, pistons etc

when I say "tight", I mean you can rotate by hand if you try hard enough, but not "freeplay" as in zero torque

Usually motors have the crank pulley and belt attached, but I have had engines without the belts, and they didnt have freeplay that I can recall

After many hours scouring the internet and several videos on YT along with the manufactures manuals I believe i have boiled the problem down to being the timing chain. With the damn thing having 250xxx miles along with unknow history of upkeep and no visible witness marks anywhere on the front end of the motor, I feel that would be a place to start with what I have found from videos and a few elders in my jeep community. Nothing else ill rebuild the motor and have a basically new motor that I know that I can trust with where I want to take this build.
