Default Idle Problems

Today, I just put in all new plugs, wires, rotor, and distributor cap on my 1994 Jeep Cherokee Country edition. After doing this, the "Rough idle" I had before, is now much worse. Starts every single time flawlessly, and idles at a pretty normal 800-900 for me, but it has a lilt in the idle, kind of gets bogged down every cycle it seems. Also, when I put it into drive, and give it minimal throttle, it chugs pretty badly and has no power until I give it gas and get it revving about about 1100. What does this sound like? I was guessing O2 sensors, but could this problem be related to the tune up I've just done??

Please help, all replies are appreciated. Thanks!

Can't hurt to pull out your IAC and clean it up. Helps with rough and high idle, not sure it is your problem though.

I agree that a thorough cleaning of the throttle body and the idle air control would be a good idea.

If this new symptoms started immediately after your tuneup, go back and double check all of your plug/cap/wire connections. Use of a little dielectric grease is helpful here.

Checking for any stored codes (key-on, key-off) can also yield a clue.

It kind of sounds like you have a vacuum leak

You might have done so already, but I would double check everything you've replaced before starting on something new. Are all the connections ok. Wires on plugs on rotor etc. Are you absolutely sure you got the sparks wired up to the rotor in the correct sequence? Happened to me the other day as well. Replaced the lot, could have sworn I got them back in exactly the same order, but still made a mistake.

Your firing order is screwed up.

Could the IAC or Throttle Body cause my jeep to lurch and "chug" when I'm giving it little throttle though? If I don't give it much gas, just to pass idling range, it chugs and lurches and doesn't really pick up or accelerate until I'm past 1100 RPMS.

I had this problem with mine all though mine is carbonated. My issue was that i had a little baby tear in a vacuum line and there was gunk in one of my fuel lines. and one of my bushings in my carb (yes wouldn't be on yours) was cracked. Fixed them all at once so don't know what exactly it was or if it was all combined. Hope that helps a little

Default Vacuum

I'm guessing it's my Vacuum system, many of the lines are original from the factory and are getting really old. Went around replacing the rubber vacuum elbows on the lines I could, didn't help much. I think I'll go out with a vacuum gauge and test the lines individually.

ya put a tube to your ear and put it near the lines one at a time and you can start to single out the Hissing sound and find the leak quicker.

What brand of plugs did you put in? Stay away from Bosch, E3's or other gimmick plug. Standard copper Champions are your best bet.

I used Champion copper plugs, duralast wires, and a high performance duralast rotor and distributor cap. I just checked all my lines with a vacuum gauge, and leaks are minimal after I replaced some worn/cracked rubber elbows earlier. I did however check my fuel line pressure, and they might be clogged up. I'm going to replace my fuel filter and run some injector/line cleaner though my next tank of gas and hopefully that combo will help. Thanks for all the help guys.

Firing order is not correct, or you don't have one or more of the boots on the spark plugs correctly.

Default Firing order

Firing order is all correct. Plugs are in correctly and snug, all wires are attached solidly to both plugs and distributor cap. After checking that, went through and checked as many vac lines as possible and changed out some old rubber vacuum elbows that were cracked. Didn't help much. Then moved onto fuel (Vac problem still possible though) and started checking fuel lines and such. Realized the fuel filter was old as hell and probably clogged and terrible, so I changed that. Still, no change. Plan on running some injector/line cleaner through tomorrow, maybe it's clogged injectors. Hope so, at least, or I get to scavenge through the rest of the vacuum and Exhaust Gas Recirculation system to find the problem.
