how much does an average junkyard trans run? I believe I have an AW4. I dumped 600 bux in my tranny and it stalls the engine out soon as I put her in gear. I actually wouldnt mind selling the jeep but I cant post in the for sale forum.

I picked one up today from a local jeep boneyard for my 96. Cost me $350 and he threw in the spare tire carrier for free.

Did you replace the torque converter? A bad converter can act like a bad clutch sometimes.

I didnt replace torque convertor. It acts like its not downshifting lower than third gear. I can drive it just dont have low gears and it doesnt stay in overdrive. My trans guy changed bad solenoids inside trans. Hes stuck scratching his head and im out 600 bux

Before buying a transmission, do yourself a favor and look in to the TPS. When these go bad they have all kinds of shifting problems. Normally you get a check engine light. I would make sure the sensor is good before spending tons of money.

Have you checked to see if the fuse for the Trans Control Unit isn't blown?

I had auto electrician check it out. He diagnosed bad solenoid. Tps was fine so he said. Trans guy changed all 3 solenoids and also said tps checked out. It has check engine light on.Trans mechanic scanned it said no codes. He thinks somethin is bad internally. I had autozone scan it they came up with high and low idle, plus oxygen sensor. Im at my wits end and I work outa town. I havent the time to fool with it. It is listed on craigslist LOL.

I pulled fuse for TCU so I can shift it manually to get it to trans shop but that method no longer works.

If its not shifting manually with the fuse pulled or TCU unplugged, its internal rather than electrical.

Mine didn't want to downshift, and it needed to be put into 1-2 to pull out, and it was the S1 solenoid.

replace the tps anyway. i went to the jeep dealership with misfire, o2 sensor, and transmission codes (not to mention the worst delayed/hardshift ever). they told me to replace both the engine and trans. just changed my tps and it back like new with no check engine light

I unhooked the TPS and put it in gear. I got the same result.
