i need opinions please
Just wondering what everyone thinks the biggest tire you can run on a stock dana 35 with an aussie locker. I'm looking into the bfg mud terrain km2 33/10.5r15 but I don't want to be breaking stuff in the rear constantly. Its a stock 35 with 3.55 gears. I'm concerned because I plan on going out in the mud and some rocks. Thanks for your opinion.

Well, this is my opinion, but to be on the safe side....32's
I run a stock Dana 35. And I run 32's just fine....but then again, I don't have lockers

31's if locked. seen numerous d35 explode that are locked with 32's. I would take the tire $$ and spend it on a real axle.

I agree, but that being said I wheel with a good friend that has been running 4:88's a Detroit with a super 35 set up. Trxus MT 33X12.5 for several years, he is hardcore rocks, MOAB twice, and everything Ga., Tn. and Al. have to offer, nearly no mud. He takes very technical lines and leads rigs with much beefier setups and 35's and 37's. He is a fineese type driver, not a skinny pedal freak and I've yet to see him break an axle. Would I run his set up? No way, but it works for him. Just throwing it out there I believe in heavy duty, at a minimum I would go with a D44 or an 8.8 or a 29 spline 8.25.

It is strange the club I belong to has at least 6 guys running the 35s, one of the guys is locked and running 33s on his tj and has yet to break an axle. The others are open and running 30s through 33s and I know of 3 of them that have broken an axle.
I don't think that the guy with the locker drives any better or anyway it doesn't seem so to me. He also runs some hard trails, Moab Rim, and behind the rocks to name a couple. I think some people just have good luck with them and some don't.

Wrangler's don't weigh near as much as a Cherokee and breakage doesn't happen as often. Just keep in mind when it does break a shaft (notice I didn't if) your wheel will fall off because the shaft will slide out of the housing.

As far as weight goes I'm not sure of the weights, but he has a sport cage and bumpers and winch and belly pan plus a frame so the weight would be close. I also didn't say he wouldn't break the 35, just that I didn't get why some break just by looking at them and some guys run them for a long time without problems.

I would definately upgrade to atleast a 29 spline 8.25. But, if you insist on keeping your 35 I wouldn't go any higher than 31's or 32's locked.
