This is a classic example of "Which came first? The chicken or the egg". Did the crummy connection cause switch failure at one time? Did the PO just replace the switch and not address the crummy terminals?
It's a standard GM switch. Just don't get some chain auto parts store's economy line and you should be fine.

OK bought a new switch. one heck of a time. got it done. the odd thing was the key wouldn't turn the ignition smoothly. very rough and sticky to the point where it didnt return to the on position after starting and made that grinding noise. any who got it on and ran it. Still getting hot
. this time with the steering column cover off i felt around and it was the red wire that was getting it hot. so after being uncomfortable going on vacation with the new sticky starter (i assume it just needs broken in) we put the old one on because i figured if i need to run the fan, might as well ruin the old one rather than ruin the new one. i did bring the new one if i need to change them. along with all the tools needed. any other ideas? assuming the red is getting hot because its carrying to much power/ how do i stop that?

I'm pretty certain the fan power should be going through it's relay. Any chance somebody "hot-wired" it? (no pun intended!). I suppose it you pulled the fan relay and it still worked that might be a clew. Just a thought.
" key wouldn't turn the ignition smoothly.", An issue with the control link to the new switch?

idk what the problem was but put the old one in and it turned just fine. the "new" one was hard to turn and almost felt "gritty" and "sticky" not letting it turn smoothly. almost like it wasnt greased enough. but i dont think there's a way to lubricate it.
