Hello there. I got a 1991 jeep cherokee 4.0 high output. I got a new radiator 1 year ago, new thermostat new water pump i have a switch ran to my electric fan, so it is always. The fan clutch has resistance when warm, and is free spining when cold. I took a temperature gun and it conforms it is over heating. It gets 220 230. I did a head gasket tester and it showed there was no exhaust gases in the coolant. I have no idea what else to do. Thanks for any help you can give.

Unreliable test method at best and the fan clutch is the only major cooling system component left to replace. Look at the bright side, u don't have to drain/refill coolant to change the fan clutch.
Double check thermo with temp gun. Or put it in hot water, and heat till it opens. Monitor with a thermostat, obviously..
This is always a suggestion that gets questioned, so question if you will, but is your rad cap new?
Edit- air filter nice and clean?

Highway, road driving it dont heat up. And yes the rad cap is brand new, and new rad hoses both upper and lower.
Edit- fan shroud is there, on both fans.

Does it make a smell kinda like brakes when it gets warm? Or on the highway? Sounds like something I had. Clutch bearing in my compressor, was heating me up. Took a wrench to the front fan and it was locked up. Running it with it locked up forces it to move grinds down the bearing for the clutch and starts heating things. No bueno.

If highway driving is making it heat up, it could also be the thermostat. Cheap aftermarket ones don't last as long. We spent quite a while replacing many parts and looking for leaks on my mom's car when it was doing the same thing (overheating on the highway) and it turned out to be the 5 month old thermostat. Just a thought.

I put a spectre filter on, and its just chilling in the engine bay. I was wondering with that warmer air getting into my intake would that heat it up at all.? Thanks again everyone!

I'm overheating on the highway going up hill at 65mph and about 220-225 Eng Temp. It was only 80 degrees out yesterday. I've got 313,000 miles. Could my Torque Converter be worn out and cause me to overheat? I'm going to try the easy routes first, Thermostat, Water Pump and see what happens.
