You will probably end up replacing the head on the Jeep.
Yours is acting like mine did. After many $$$$$$$$$$$$$ spent on everything under the sun, that finally cured it.
Take careful note I said replace it, not rebuild yours. Rebuilding did not work on mine.

I have the same problem and I have replaced everything. I am switching to electric fans this weekend and I really hoping this works.
Firestorm has a valid point but I decided not to do this because I pressure tested my cylinders and it held pressure for over 4 hours! on each one I checked. I would recommend pressure testing before you go and do a job like this. I am told that its normal for these Jeeps to run this hot but it just doesnt feel right to me. What if I want to tow something up a hill? I would think I would red line....Just blabbering but will keep posting to share what I am doing to mine to cool it down.
Here is a good article to read " http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums/showthread.phpt= "

I have water wetter in mine and it still didnt help. Makes me think those things are a lie...I am gonna go and order a 180 degree t-stat. Lets think about this for a sec....
Since we are both overheating at high rates of speed and the temp is way over the t-stat opening temp then...isn't the t-stat fully opened? If it is then it will not matter what t-stat you put in. In my opinion it would all boil down to not enough air flow coming across the radiator. I have a winch and bumper that could be restricting air flow. I am gonna put some pics up on my profile in a sec and if you wanna take a look to see if maybe it is causing a problem then be my guest!

Every one here is well meaning in their advice.
I believe that what happened to mine was the the head cracked inside, where it could not be seen. It was even Magnafluxed by the rebuilder.
As an aside, a lower temp thermostat will not help. One poster said to "always run coolant". Actually, straight water is the best thing at transferring heat. We use coolant to help control corrosion, raise the boiling point, and lower the freezing point.
A Jeep 4.0 should run at about 205-210 degrees if everything is correct and working properly.
As I said, it took me much frustration and many $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to finally fix mine.
School Of Hard Knocks, guys.

Absolutely correct - a lower temp tstat does NOT keep the engine cooler, it just changes which temp the tstat opens at. That's all. Definitely sounds like a failing head. Probably some oil in your coolant or vice-versa.

I owned an 88 and had these same problems. It overheated Constantly. So I replaced the reservoir, all hoses, radiator, flushed coolant, etc. Any guess to the problem? PISTON ROD BEARINGS. They were bad and metal shards were scraping off and causing the oil in the pan and motor to heat it up in turn causing every thing to over heat. That was the most costly $500 vehicle I ever bought.

Took the head off and it was warped. And there was water in one of the cylinders. Im gonna get it milled. Unless anyone knows of a cheap place to buy a brand new head. He wanted 365 to mill it. Thanks again everyone for all the help!
