help, my xj can't accelerate
Hi all,
My carburator XJ can not accelerate. It runs at no more than 20 mph. Sometimes it go well if i adjust the carburator screw or ignition time. Sometimes it can go well again by itself. This happens quite often recently. This morning, after a 3 miles short drive, the problem disappeared. What shall I do?
Need I replace the cylinder wire or spark or else?
thanks
PS: '97, carburator, 4 cylinders 2.5 L, manual (produced in '97, but it's the '87 type i think)

ok, i was just thinking about what my friend told me with some automatic cherokees not being able to go into any gears but 1st and reverse and it being a real easy fix, i think he said fuse or something.
it sounds to me like you've got some kind of blockage in the carb. have you tried removing air filter and blasting the venturies with carb cleaner - it may just need a good cleaning or possibly a rebuild kit(?) be sure to remember where the fuel mix screw was originally set since that's where it was when it was still running good. replace air filter too if it's old...
also replace fuel filter if its old too...

gas tanks tend to get debris collected in the bottom of them over time. when you run your tank low sometimes that debris gets picked up and ran through the fuel lines and into the carb/throttle body. the obstructions can starve the engine of fuel. it could be worth while to drop and drain the tank. now, i'm not saying that's the problem is, but from what you've described that's where i'd start looking. you definitely have carburation and not fuel injection, right, carburation went away with the mid-to-late 80's? also with carbs, they get gunked up with age if you don't clean 'em out. if the fuel passages become narrowed by build up it will affect engine perfomance. wouldn't hurt to check the condition of the plugs, too, they can give an indication of how your engine is performing. hope that helps...
