Okay, this is my first thread. But here goes, I bought a jeep cherokee 1992, 4.0L 6 inline, it's automatic and 4x2, it is completely stock, I bought it recently, it never gave me aproblem with the transmission, but it's happening more and more, the transmission shifts to reverse but it wont get in gear until after a while, I bought gunk transmedic, haven't used it, I can't find the transmission cap so I can put it in and see if it helps the transmission. It has 150,000 miles, it's my only car and daily driver, I'm just scared the transmission will break or stop working. And can I CHANGE THE TRANS FLUID and Filter? Thank you guys.
Put the trans medic in the trash can.
Here's why: If the trans has built up some sludge or varnish, the last thing you want is to break it loose so it can plug up the valve body. A series of successive fluid changes are a much better, gentler alternative.
Try these things:
From a stop, shift to "1-2" instead of OD. Does that engage immediately? Let us know.
Check your fluid. The transmission dipstick is on the passenger's side of the engine bay. Have a look at fluid level (trans warm, parked on a flat surface, running in Park- see marks on dipstick),
color (should be pinkish-red, not dark)
and smell (should not smell like burning tupperware).
This is the Transmission dipstick (pic stolen from 4wd magazine- credit where due and such):
If the fluid looks or smells bad, change it.
There is a drain plug on the trans pan, no need to drop the pan. Dump & refill through the dipstick tube. Use Dexron/Mercon. Ignore the parts guy when he suggests "ATF +4".
Drive 50-ish miles and drain and refill again if it's still marginal.

it won't let me shift to 3 or 1-2. The transmission fluid doesn't smell bad or look bad. Kind of pink red though.

This is the trans fluid that I took out. It was very little each time so I believe it needs more trans fluid.<br/>
