Default Help with 2001 Engine numbers

Does anyone know how to match motor to VIN?
I'm trying to figure out if the motor in my recently purchased XJ is the original. I found a block stamp that reads 102MX23, but see nothing that resembles the VIN. There is also the letter "P" or "d", (depending on which way you look at it), written with a white marker on the block plate where the stamp is.

-THANKS!

Built on the 23rd of Feb 2001. Likely original but if it wasn't, the engine is from 01.

Thanks. Is there any castings that reflect the VIN in any way?

No, the engine is not matched directly to a particular vehicle, only date of manufacture. My 2000 WJ was manufactured in August of 99 and sold as a 2000 model.

Thanks. I expected the motor from my '01 to have been made in the previous year like yours was. Is it normal for an '01 to have a motor from the same calendar year? In case it matters, t's the 60 year Anniversary Edition model.

I don't see why not.
What is the date of manufacture on the white sticker on the driver's door?

Door sticker says 3-01 so it looks good. You're saying that engines are not numbered to specific cars? Does that mean that the whole "original engine" paradigm is out the window for these vehicles?

So motor manufactured in February. Put in a Jeep in March. Timeline works if you ask me.

There may be a sticker on the valve cover with the VIN on it. I'm not sure if there is a specific casting stamp with the VIN on it - but considering the alignment of the dates, it's pretty certain that the engine is original. Swapping an engine is a pretty major job - not the sort of thing that happens on a routine basis.

Now the date on the block coinciding with the date on the door is even more telling because the block design of the 4.0L engines that were put in XJ's in 01 were ONLY put in XJ's. Starting in 99 the newer style block (not tremendously different, but mounting points and accessory locations were different) was used in WJ's (Grand Cherokees). TJ's (Wranglers) got the new block in 00. So the block compatible with the XJ was used only up to 98 in GC's and up to 99 in Wranglers. So in 00 and 01, the "old style" block was only put in XJ's and since 01 was the last model year of the XJ, that was it for that block design.
